"CK" Your Privilege: Antiracism "Skool"

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion invites you to apply to participate in the inaugural KSU "CK" Your Privilege: Antiracism "Skool" (CYPAS). The program provides a valuable skill development opportunity for students, faculty and staff who want to increase their knowledge and skills around anti-racism work. It offers participants an opportunity to move from non-racist thinking to anti-racist actions while connecting and engaging with other members of the campus community who are prepared to engage with anti-racism work.

CYPAS is semester-long initiative with a student track, and a faculty and staff track. Each cohort will be limited to twenty participants. You must register online. Once you have registered, KSU's CDO and DCDO will review all registration materials and confirm participants within the first two weeks in October.

The application deadline for the fall semester is Friday, October 16, 2020.

The Goals:

The "CK" Your Privilege: Anti-racism "Skool" (CYPAS) seeks to:

  • Develop understanding of racism and its' components
  • Develop of understanding of the impact of racism on the person, institution, and society
  • Equip participants with skills to dismantle racism

The Anti-racism "Skool" consists of 6 sessions, offered throughout the semester. The program expectations are outlined below:

Expectations:

Participants in the CYPAS must commit to a series of workshops and programs throughout the semester. If you are confirmed to participate, you must attend all scheduled sessions in their entirety. The Program requirements are as follows:

  • Participate in six program sessions throughout the year
  • Read one book, How to Be An Antiracist, by Ibram X. Kendi, and be prepared to discuss with workshop participants
  • Read one article, Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, by Peggy McIntosh
  • Complete the Implicit Association Test
  • Complete the Intercultural Development Inventory Assessment.

  1. The History of Systematic Racism
  2. Understanding Privilege
  3. Racial Justice on Campus: What It Looks and Feels Like
  4. Silenced Voices
  5. Unlearning Racist Behavior
  6. Allyship

Format:

  • Faculty/Staff cohort of 20 and student cohort of 20 (confirmed registrants)
  • Six (6) sessions will be offered for students during the fall semester and six (6) sessions will be offered for faculty and staff during the spring semester.

Fall 2020

Workshop Session Descriptions

Session I: The History of Systematic Racism – This workshop will examine the history of racism and how it informs where we are today. Institutions such as the American educational system, federal laws and supreme court decisions, as well as how race is actualized in the United States will be covered. This engaging, interactive session will draw upon a range of sources and invite attendees to be active participants in the discussion. Read book: How to Be An Antiracist.

Session II: Understanding Privilege – This workshop will provide an overview of what privilege is and who benefits from it in American society. In addition, we will examine its relationship to higher education, economics, employment, laws, and the enforcement of laws. The session will engage participants in developing a holistic understanding of privilege and its relationship to power. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh and personal stories to develop ways to undo oppression within systems of power and privilege. Session III: Racial Justice on Campus: What It Looks Like and Feels Like – This workshop is designed to explore why race is still an issue in higher education and contextualize the role it plays in how access is provided, forms of discrimination, scholarship opportunities, financial aid, language within the classroom and academic pedagogy. Read book: How to Be An Antiracist.

Session IV: Silenced Voices – This workshop will look at how we can make space for identities that tend to get silenced or overlooked in antiracism practices. Moreover, the workshop will discuss approaches to practices that are inclusive through symbolism, holidays, locations for prayers, perceptions of low income and first-generation students, students who are parents, students with disabilities, and international students. Session V: Unlearning Racist Behavior – During this workshop participants will explore what they know and believe about race through assessments and exercises. Furthermore, the workshop will explore what an antiracist education looks like and the what the role of individuals, colleges and universities looks like in this context. Session VI: Allyship – This workshop will examine the concept of allyship and what it means to be an antiracist ally. Participants will complete the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Assessment prior to the workshop and go over the results of an IDI profile for the group. Complete the IDI Assessment.
